Canadian Small Business focus on growing business capabilities, less on cutting operational costs

Last week, Staples released the results of their Canadian Small Business National Quarterly Confidence Index study. According to the study, more business owners focus on building their business capabilities and offerings than cutting costs to cope with the weaker economy. Only 49% of businesses adopted cutting operational costs (down 6% since March) while the number of businesses who expanded their offerings are up 5% and those who expanded their skill sets - up 6%.

Have you changed anything that helped your business in the weak economy? Do you plan any changes in the near future? Share your thoughts.

The only thing I did was more aggressive selling, with good results so far.
A couple of my clients in manufacturing took advantage of some governmental programs. For example, in Ontario, there are loans and grants for training, hiring young employees, investing in research and development a.s.o.There is help available, some just need to look deeper.

We have changed a couple of things, we have brought a lawyer into our paralegal practice and expanded the areas we can offer service, we can now do Criminal Law, Family Law and Civil litigation, in addition to Traffic, Small Claims and some landlord/tenant matters....
I am hoping to get some additional advertising done as well.
